Hi, it’s Kirsty from Blue Planet Custodians. You know, I don’t consider myself to be an expert gardener, in fact it’s taken me quite some time to even learn how to garden. But what I know now is that when I want to look after myself, and when I want to create something sustainable – because it’s about nurturing me and nurturing my space, it’s actually quite easy.
Is this organic gardening thing new to you?
What I would suggest to you, is if you’re interested in maybe learning a little bit more about growing your own veggies and learning how to live sustainably, you could start by maybe by getting a pot plant of basil. Just a little one, and putting it on your kitchen windowsill and giving that a go. And once you realize that you can actually look after basil and you didn’t kill it, you can get a bigger pot and maybe you can plant something else besides your basil. Maybe plant some mint or something. Mint survives really easily. You don’t have to do much to look after it at all. This seems simple, but sometimes simple organic gardening starts with small successes!
By taking those little steps, you can actually prove to yourself that you can grow things. And when you grow your own peppermint, for example, you can have your own peppermint tea and it tastes amazing. It’s so different to just buying a tea bag in the shop. And that’s a really easy way to start.
And then once you learn, you can then go and maybe plant your on veggie garden. And as you take those little steps, you’re creating more of a sustainable lifestyle to you and you’re nurturing you as well.
My husband and I were recently in Japan and what we learned over there about the way these people sustain themselves is amazing. Every little community, most backyards have a veggie garden. So they grow their own veggies, and if they don’t have their own because it’s too dense a population, they’ll have a little community backyard where they grow their own veggies. So they don’t have all these, they don’t have all these lawns and things they have to look after all the time, they’ve got vegetables that sustain them and look after them and nurture them as human beings.
And it would be so exciting if we did more of that in Australia. We live here in Maleny and we have a number of community gardens in Maleny and it will be great to be able to show you around some of those on the Blue Planet Custodians website as well. So I look forward to sharing those things with you.
